ZAVIER

London-based poet, creative facilitator and spoken word artist

“I create to explore through the architecture of words, rhythm and the space in between them”

ZAVIER’s practice - mostly through creative writing and spoken word performance - explores the relationship between universally connected topics and the subconscious narratives attached to them. Creating pieces and experiences that innovate at the cross-section of performance and education, in a way that questions cognitively and resonates somatically.

ABOUT

From spoken word and conscious rap, to poetry and guided meditation, to hip hop and indie-soul, to creative lecturing and public speaking, to psychology and neuroscience, ZAVIER’s lyricism draws from many angles.Creating at this rare intersection of disciplines, ZAVIER explores the boundaries of what spoken word can be and where it is shown.Performing for the first time in 2023, ZAVIER has already performed amongst the likes of Wim Hof, Afriquoi, Fearne Cotton, Dr. Vandana Shiva and Nick Mulvey. His performances have extended beyond UK festivals and into educational organisations, multi-billion pound companies and wellbeing retreats.Regardless of where he performs, socially conscious lyricism and site-specific engagements creatively captivate and educate the audience. He creates and conducts experiences, rather than performances, blurring the lines between performing and creative facilitation. With material specific to each space and its audience, enabling a deeper response to the environment.

“In its very nature, the human experience is a creative experience. That’s why creative experiences bring us back to our human experience. This is at the core of all my work.”

Underpinning ZAVIER’s projects is ‘Creative Wellbeing’: The influence of creativity and creative experiences as a means of improving the wellbeing of those experiencing them. This principle extends beyond traditionally creative spaces, into any space or environment.Rather than a linear projection between speaker and audience, ZAVIER sees performing as an unfolding circular dialogue, in which everyone present learns more about their perspective, and therefore, their reality.

This space houses several audio recordings I created within the last year, to share some of the different ways I lyrically explore. In a live setting, the styles I adopt vary per performance and are based on the environment, energy and audience at the time.

LYRICAL LECTURESHere are some pieces from the lyrical lectures project, which you can find more about here. These pieces explore the topics of listening, death and art.

LYRICAL MEDITATIONSThis is pretty much what it says on the tin. Blending spoken word into guided meditation.

COMMISSIONSIntuitive Psychology Association- Floating Rivers (Lyrical Journey 9)As the resident spoken word artist at The Intuitive Psychology Association, I created a series of lyrical journeys for their educational curriculum. A lyrical journey offers a rhythmic mediative summary of the energy and content within each training module, creatively enhancing the student's learning experience.Floating Rivers is a piece created in response to the content of their ninth module, which focused on habit forming, perspective taking, manifestation and the psychology of flow.

School Breathe - Breathe SlowIn partnership with School Breathe, a Community Interest Company improving wellbeing in schools, I created a piece called Breathe Slow to lyrically explore the fundamentals of breathing.

PROJECT: LYRICAL LECTURES

“An absolutely ace experience”
Fearne Cotton
“I’ve not seen a spoken word performance that powerful since I saw Benjamin Zephaniah 25 years ago.”
Juno Williams, Community Festival, Wales
“I didn’t think I liked spoken word, this has changed my perspective on the whole art form”
Kurt Harris, Happy Place Festival, Manchester

‘Lyrical Lectures’ is a performance project that creatively explores and challenges perceptions of universally experienced topics, blending spoken word, education, rap and poetry. The project encourages conscious engagement with such topics to dissolve subconsciously inherited and embedded narratives.

Drawing from his experience at University and wider education, in Lyrical Lectures, ZAVIER redefines what a lecture can be. Innovating and combining multiple lyrical, educational and performance formats to create an immersive educational and entertaining experience.Topics and themes explored through the project so far include: communication, attention, creativity, community, design, deep listening, labels, art, technology, death, happiness, breath, family, nature, society, meditation, culture, environment, inner child, the rat race, music, subjectivity, language, change, imagination, sound, silence, movement and more.Despite the complexity of such topics, ZAVIER’s unique lyricism and delivery makes them accessible and digestible, creating awareness, connection and dialogue around them.Research and collaboration form the foundation of these pieces, with academics, artists from marginalised backgrounds, meditation teachers and psychologists involved in the creative process.Lyrical Lectures, ZAVIER’s debut project in 2023, has been at events, organisations and festivals around the UK.

TESTIMONIALS

“Zavier hosted an amazing session for us over at KIND HQ to help us celebrate World Kindness Day. Zavier performed some unique and tailored spoken word and lyrically guided meditative pieces which provided us with the space to step away from our desk and think about our own wellbeing. Zavier is such a talented performer and worked to give us a workshop that tapped into our purpose and helped us live through the brand values.”
Jena Allen, Marketing, KIND UK

"The standing ovation said it all! Zavier's compelling mastery of both the written and spoken word seamlessly combines a blend of intellect, enlightenment and entertainment. His faultless performance was full of heart, humour and a repertoire of mind-expanding words that truly left me thinking and feeling deeply. Zavier delivers with such presence and grace, he creates a unique connection with the audience, unlike anything I've encountered in live performances. He is an exceptional talent!"
Aimee Hartley, Author and Founder, School Breathe

“Zavier has dramatically enhanced our students’ learning journey with his lyrical journeys. We wanted to enhance our students learning experience and stand out amongst competitors. Rather than stale summary slides Zavier has created bespoke lyrical journeys that encapsulate the learners experience. The feedback has been exceptional and it’s an aspect that makes our training stand out in a crowded market place. Zavier is amazing to work with, he is innovative, creative and delivers beyond expectation.”
Sarah Gregg, Psychologist and Author, Intuitive Psychology Association

“Zavier delivered two performances at our retreat. His pieces were perfectly selected to align with the theme and work we were exploring. His passion for his work, exceptional delivery and natural charisma lit up the room on both occasions and provided a boost of energy and flurry of insights for everyone. His contribution to our experience was just beautiful.”
Graham Smith, Founder, Aurora Life Experiences
